Have you even been so busy at work that you’ve been missing out on spending quality time with the family? Take them on a short break to Cley Next the Sea in Norfolk. Once a bustling port for merchants, history has left its mark on this beautiful village famous for its relaxing atmosphere and nature reserves. This is the perfect place for you and your children to unwind as well as share some fun and educational experiences together to broaden their interest in nature and the environment. So pack your bags and check in at one of the many great Norfolk hotels on the coast. Here are some ideas of things for you and your family to do in and around Cley Next the Sea:
Explore the coastline
The beach at Cley is one of the best spots along the whole of the coastline to enjoy some coastal fun. It is well known for its flora and fauna including sea lavender, the sand dunes, nearby seal population, salt-marsh creeks and splendid views. There is access to some great walks taking in its salt marshes, the picturesque village, its much-photographed windmill and the large St. Margaret’s Church.
Take a village tour
Cley Next the Sea isn’t just a picture-postcard village with stunning good looks; it’s also rich in arts and crafts. Visit The Pinkfoot Gallery where a wide range of British nature-inspired sculptures and paintings are exhibited. Watch the craftsmen at Made in Cley whilst they work as they create sculptures, tableware, jewellery, prints and many other items you can bring back home as special long-lasting memories of your trip. Avid readers will enjoy time in Crabpot Books, a second-hand bookshop with lots of interesting finds, including a diverse range of fiction titles.
Visit its historical church
The village is well known for its church built for St. Margaret of Antioch, dating back to the 14th century. The building is really large – some say it’s about the size of a cathedral, which should give you a clue about the expanse and wealth of what used to be a town in one of England’s busiest ports. The church is still used for services and it’s open for everyone who wishes to join in.
Don’t miss the Cley Marshes
The Cley Marshes has a wide range of coastal environments that invite a huge number of bird species, making it one of the most popular nature reserves in the country. Hides that blend well into the landscape provide a spectacular view of the abundant bird life. Regardless of the season, there’s always something to see and even some popular hotels in Norfolk, like The George, overlook the reserve. In addition, the Norfolk Wildlife Trust also holds a year-round programme of events, many of which are family-friendly and designed for children of all ages to enjoy learning about the different wildlife that can be found across the reserve.
