The George at Cley is a hotel with a rich history. Built in the late 1700s, the hotel started serving its first customers in 1789. It is thought to have been where the inaugural meeting of the Norfolk Wildlife Trust was held back in 1926. Nowadays the hotel is just a hop skip and a jump away from Cley’s prime birdwatching spot where people come from all over the world to experience the four nature reserves teeming with birds and wildlife. The George looks out over the salt marshes, and many of our rooms have views out towards the sea.
Even after it fell victim to the devastating floods of 1953, and barely escaping the more recent 2013 tidal surge, crowds continued to come to this pretty corner of Norfolk to enjoy all that North Norfolk has to offer; there’s a timeless idyllic charm that our guests love. All the first and second floor bedrooms are newly refurbished with new bathrooms installed. Rooms 3, 4, and 5 on the first floor offer a wonderful view of the marshes and are perfect for a spot of pre-breakfast birdwatching.
The George’s restaurant, refurbished in April, 2014, has developed a sound reputation for working hand in hand with local producers who regularly supply us with the freshest fish and meat throughout the year. Provenance is important to our kitchen and we’re spoilt rotten with the plethora of local ingredients that are available to us. If you are interested in game, we can arrange for you to go on a local shoot (in season). You can even talk to our chefs about arranging a menu around your catch.
Our team of chefs have crafted a mouth-watering lunch menu and well-planned set A-la-carte dinner menu with daily-changing specials. We create everything by hand, including the freshly baked bread we serve. Beverage choices include real ales and an extensive wine list, many of which are available by the glass. We’re dog friendly and your four-legged friends are very welcome in our bar and front restaurant.
Here at The George, with huge skies, windy roads, unspoilt beaches, and mile upon mile of salt marshes, tranquillity is truly at your doorstep. Book with us today and experience relaxation where you can soak up the natural beauty of North Norfolk. Book online via our website or contact us by phone 01263 740652 or email firstname.lastname@example.org. See you soon!
